Ambition & anxiety…

There is, for me, a direct link between ambition and anxiety. The desire to be the best I can be. To drive momentum into my life and career. To keep growing, learning and improving. Because getting better never stops. I was interested to see Harvard Business Review’s The Anxious Achiever Toolkit, which explores how stress and worry can be turned into a source of strength at work and in leadership. That really resonated with me. Because high achievers tend not to be micro-avoiders. They do not quietly step around every difficult thing. They deal with what is coming towards them. The challenge. The pressure. The obstacle. The decision. The next hill to climb. And yes, that can create anxiety. But I do not think all anxiety is the enemy. For me, temporary anxiety can be useful. It can keep me alert. It can keep me safe. It can keep me motivated. It can remind me that something matters. Of course, there is a huge difference between temporary anxiety that sharpens us and chronic anxiety that harms us. But I do think we need a more nuanced conversation. Ambition is often celebrated. Anxiety is often hidden. Yet for many high achievers, they sit much closer together than we admit. The question is not whether ambition creates pressure. Often, it does. The question is whether we can understand that pressure, manage it well, and use it without being consumed by it.
